The eight phases

A complete lunar cycle takes about 29.5 days. The moon moves through these eight phases in order, and astrology has assigned each one its own emotional weather.

Common questions

How long is a complete lunar cycle?
About 29.5 days from one new moon to the next. The moon spends roughly three to four days in each of the eight phases.
Why does the moon look different each night?
Because we see different fractions of its sunlit side as it orbits Earth. The moon itself isn't changing shape โ€” our angle on it is.
Does the moon actually affect mood?
Evidence for direct biological effects is weak. People do report stronger emotions around the full moon, but most researchers attribute that to attention bias and brighter nights. Astrologically, the cycle is used as a framework for noticing internal weather, not as a force pulling on you.
When is the best time to start something new?
Traditional astrology favors the new moon and waxing phases for beginnings, and the full moon and waning phases for completion or release. Treat it as a rhythm, not a rule.
