Chart Basics

Natal Chart

(Birth Chart)

A map of where all the planets were at the exact moment and location of your birth. It serves as your personal cosmic blueprint.

Ascendant

(Rising Sign)

The zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It represents your outward personality, first impressions, and physical appearance.

Midheaven

(MC (Medium Coeli))

The highest point in your chart, representing your public image, career path, and life direction. It shows what you aspire to become.

Descendant

(DC)

The point directly opposite your Ascendant, representing partnerships, marriage, and how you relate to others in one-on-one relationships.

Imum Coeli

(IC)

The lowest point in your chart, representing your roots, home, family, and private self. It shows your emotional foundation.

Signs & Elements

Element

One of four fundamental energies (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) that characterize the zodiac signs. Each element represents a different way of experiencing life.

Modality

(Quality)

One of three modes of operation (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable) that describe how signs initiate, maintain, or adapt to change.

Cardinal Signs

Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. These signs initiate action and mark the beginning of seasons. They are natural leaders and starters.

Fixed Signs

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. These signs maintain and stabilize. They are determined, persistent, and resistant to change.

Mutable Signs

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. These signs adapt and transform. They are flexible, versatile, and comfortable with change.

Polarity

The division of signs into Masculine (Fire/Air) and Feminine (Earth/Water) energies, representing outward/active vs. inward/receptive qualities.

Planets & Points

Personal Planets

Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars. These fast-moving planets have the most direct influence on your personality and daily life.

Social Planets

Jupiter and Saturn. These planets govern how you relate to society, authority, and collective experiences.

Outer Planets

(Transpersonal Planets)

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. These slow-moving planets influence generations and represent transformation on a collective level.

Retrograde

When a planet appears to move backward from Earth's perspective. Retrograde periods are times for review, reflection, and reworking matters related to that planet.

Lunar Nodes

(North & South Node)

Points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. The North Node represents your soul's growth direction; the South Node shows past patterns and natural talents.

Chiron

(The Wounded Healer)

An asteroid representing our deepest wounds and our capacity to heal others through our own healing journey.

Houses

House

One of 12 divisions of the chart representing different areas of life (self, money, communication, home, etc.). Planets in houses show where their energy manifests.

House System

The mathematical method used to calculate house cusps. Common systems include Placidus, Whole Sign, and Equal House.

Angular Houses

Houses 1, 4, 7, and 10. These are the most powerful houses, representing key life areas: self, home, partnerships, and career.

Succedent Houses

Houses 2, 5, 8, and 11. These follow angular houses and relate to resources, creativity, shared resources, and community.

Cadent Houses

Houses 3, 6, 9, and 12. These precede angular houses and relate to learning, service, philosophy, and the unconscious.

Stellium

Three or more planets concentrated in one sign or house, creating an intense focus of energy in that area of life.

Aspects

Aspect

The angular relationship between two planets. Aspects describe how planetary energies interact with each other.

Conjunction

(0 degrees)

Planets in the same position, merging their energies. This is the most powerful aspect, intensifying both planets' qualities.

Opposition

Planets directly across from each other, creating tension and awareness. Requires integration of opposing forces.

Trine

(120 degrees)

A harmonious aspect between signs of the same element. Indicates natural talent, ease, and flow of energy.

Square

A challenging aspect that creates friction and tension. Squares drive growth through overcoming obstacles.

Sextile

A supportive aspect that creates opportunities. Requires some effort to activate but flows more easily than squares.

Orb

Progression

A predictive technique where each day after birth represents a year of life, showing internal evolution and development.

Solar Return

Saturn Return

When transiting Saturn returns to its natal position (around ages 29, 58, 87), marking major life transitions and maturation.

Eclipse Season

Periods when eclipses occur (2-3 times yearly), bringing fated events, revelations, and significant changes.

Void of Course Moon

When the Moon makes no more major aspects before changing signs. Traditionally considered unfavorable for starting new ventures.
